This plant is of major importance as it connects the Thirlmere and Haweswater Aqueducts. Following the Longsleddale Valley water runs from Haweswater into the Thornybank treatment plant.

A feeder pipe connects with the Thirlmere Aq flowing some miles to the west. Upto 200 Ml/d can be injected into the Thirlmere aqueduct at Kendal via the Thorneybank pipeline from the Watchgate WTW

A piped supply also comes in from Ullswater via Haweswarter and Shap
