Crook of Lune Bridge
: Waterworks Bridge |
|
Caton 1906 Waterworks Bridge The bridge carries
two pipelines that supply water from Thirlmere to Manchester across
the Lune. It has been renovated and a footpath provided for walkers
crossing the river.

'The idyllic surroundings of the Lune at Crook
of Lune Bridge are enhanced by the mellow beauty of the 16th century
bridge itself. Even motorists who scrape their cars against the narrow
parapets, (as many do) will concede the charms of this lovely section
of the river, although possibly with muted enthusiasm.' (Wainright,
1980:27) |
River Lune Bridge, Lancashire

The Thirlmere Aqueduct conveys up to 200M
l/day of water from the Lake District to Manchester. The valley
of the River Lune is crossed by means of a pressure siphon, the
aqueduct dissecting into four pipelines of 40", 44", 44"
and 54" diameter. The pipes are carried on a 100 year old multi-span
bridge, consisting of an elaborate steel superstructure on masonry
abutments and piers. Due in part to access difficulties, no major
maintenance had been carried out since its construction, and the
metalwork and roller bearings had deteriorated to a dangerous degree.
North West Water commissioned Bechtel Water
Technology to design the works, which comprised a thorough refurbishment
of the structure and freeing of the bearings. Main contractor was
Daniel Contractors Ltd.
The scheme also restored public access across
this interesting structure, a benefit much appreciated by the local
inhabitants. http://www.ice.org.uk/

Bridge Near Quernmore SD 53499 61120
The interesting feature of this is that this stone constuction probably
carries the cut and cover aqueduct profile
Why such a large bridge was built to cross a modest stream and valley
is a mystery |

Note the bridge butts up against a rockface North side where a tunnelled
section finishes and feeds directly over the bridge, in a cut and
cover profile, similar to the Quernmore Bridge

We reckon this one roomed hut with the remains of an old stove and
coat pegs on a wall was built for workman to shelter in.On the other
hand it may not have, though it seemed to be of the right age - and
